The Burning Issue |
 |
|
Dear reader,
Welcome to the first "Burning
Issue", a newsletter
detailing what the Burningsuit Consultancy is
doing, telling you about upcoming courses and
seminars, and providing a few hints and tips. In this
issue you can find out about some new leadership
and management courses
Jeremy Taylor and I are offering, and a seminar
I'm giving for Surrey Ebusiness Club.
I've also given some details of
Alison's Microsoft Courses and her new TAP
certification. My tip this month is for
PowerPoint, a simple tweak that can make
presenting with PowerPoint much easier, and
believe me when you're presenting in front
of fifty people you'll thank me for it.
There's a timely reminder to keep your virus
protection up to date, and details of where you
can get a free virus scan.
Finally I've added a selection of
cool internet links, there you'll find a
wide and eclectic list showing some of the
interesting corners of the Web.
If you like it, tell your friends,
send them a copy and get them to
subscribe here.
If you don't, you can unsubscribe with
[UNSUBSCRIBE], or send me
an
email and I'll make sure you don't receive
another copy.
I do hope you find this
interesting, informative and fun. Thanks

New
Management Training and Development Programme
I'm really
pleased to say that I will be working with my
friend and Colleague
Jeremy Taylor, to deliver a
new Management Training and Development
programme starting in May. If
you know Jeremy, you won't need me to tell you he
is a brilliant presenter and facilitator with a
real knack for training people. We're teaming up
to do a series of business management training courses,
some of these these will be:
-
Teams that work
How to build and lead more effective work teams,
using techniques of leadership, motivation and
management.
-
Leadership that works
How to lead groups or teams more effectively,
using non-threatening assertion, building better
relationships and using effective communication
techniques.
-
Presentation Skills
How to give effective presentations to large or
small audiences, successfully integrating a
powerful message with humour and audience
participation.
-
Essential
Consultancy Skills
Practical methods of working as a Consultant with clients
The courses will initially be
run in Brighton, Guildford, and the
Diamond Enterprise Hub in Crawley, but
we're looking at running them in other parts of
the South and can do on-site courses as
requested.
Please
contact us for more
detail on these courses, it looks like they will
be very popular and fill rapidly, so be quick.
I've put some
more information on these courses here.
I guarantee that on these
courses with Jeremy and I you will laugh, learn
the skills you need, and get a new insight into
business.

BroadBand and your
bottom line
|
I'll be giving a presentation
"Broadband and Your Bottom
Line, how your business can benefit from Broadband
Internet"on
Friday 23rd April at
Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot. This is an eBusiness Club breakfast
seminar run by Surrey Chambers of Commerce.
I
firmly believe that
Broadband has the ability to change the very
nature of business. Flexible working, Teleworking,
Outsourcing and Offshore resourcing will alter the
way we do business. Broadband can also change who
we work with, and who we sell to, opening up new
opportunities and markets both at home and
overseas.
In this Seminar I'll explain, in clear, jargon-free language
how you can integrate eBusiness practices into
your business and show examples and case studies
from real businesses that have already done this
and are reaping the rewards.

A TAP on your
shoulder
Alison
recently completed the Institute of Training's
Certified Trainer Assessment Programme, and is now
an Associate of the Institute of IT training. TAP
represents the leading certification programme for
those training professionals working primarily in
the classroom or in one-to-one environments, and
Alison is delighted to have this accreditation.
Alison says,
"TAP shows we're serious
about the quality of our training, and can provide
a classroom experience that meets a nationally
approved standard, delegates learn more, and leave
the course with a much better grasp of the
subject" . You can find
more about the courses Alison does on the right
hand side bar, or
here.

PowerPoint - the
ultimate tip
|
If you give Presentations with
PowerPoint you'll know all about advancing to the
next slide with the left mouse button, but what
happens when you right mouse click? The default in
PowerPoint since '98 is to pop up a menu of
options. I've seen experienced presenters turned
to gibbering wrecks as they try and move or remove
this menu with their mouse. It's great to use a
wireless mouse which frees you from the tether to
your PC, but how do you back up a slide without
encountering that daunting menu?
The answer is a simple tweak in
PowerPoint, go to Tools,
then Options, in XP
select the View tab,
and untick the option "Show
popup Toolbar", or in 2000 or 98 untick the
option "Popup menu on right
click". Voila!, the right mouse
button will then simply show the previous slide.
Now you can equip yourself with a Gyromouse, come
on our "Presentations that work" course, and knock 'em
for six with your next presentation.

Viruses, don't be an April Fool
|
April is a traditional time for
Viruses to spring into action. The virus writers
regard it as their calling to to wipe out your
hard disk as an April Fool's joke. Emails carrying
viruses proliferate on the internet, slowing
communications and clogging our in-boxes. What can
be done to protect your PC?
Well, firstly and most obviously
you should have up to date virus protection
software. McAfee and Norton all produce good
commercial products. For small businesses and
personal use there's AVG virus guard, which is
available as a FREE download here. Many systems
like AVG update themselves over the Internet, make
sure your know how to do this, and check your virus
protection is up to date.
To further check your machine
and get a
"second opinion" you can use one
of several free online virus checkers in addition
to your usual software. Take a look at
http://housecall.antivirus.com
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html
One of these can be used to scan
your PC to check for any Viruses that may have
been missed. Scan your PC regularly, perhaps once
a week, to ensure the Virus writers don't make you
an April fool.
If you think you do have a
problem with Viruses, or would like more
information please contact us.
